It is a great pleasure to welcome you all to the 24th World Congress of the International Society for Forensic Genetics that will be held at the University of Vienna (founded in 1365) from August 29, 2011 to September 3, 2011.
With this meeting in Vienna we will be re-visiting a city that is of utmost historical importance for our field of forensic genetics. The first genetic system that was used in forensic genetics, the AB0 blood group system, was discovered in Vienna in 1900 by Karl Landsteiner. Furthermore, the first forensic genetic opinion of a medical expert with regard to paternity was given by Anton Werkgartner of the Institute for Forensic Medicine at the University of Vienna in 1925 and forensic genetic expert opinions based on AB0 results were accepted by the Supreme Court of Austria (Oberster Gerichtshof) in 1926, which documented that forensic genetic serology was fully accepted as evidence for or against paternity.
We will do our very best to organize an exciting and memorable conference. We invite all scientists interested in forensic genetics to join us in August/September 2011 in Vienna.
